Talking Trash(lab) lecture by Maria Törn: Waste Management & Recyclability

Maria Törn (Aalto University) will present on Thursday 4.10. from 17.30-19.00, an overview of waste management, with an emphasis on recycling and recyclability, from an environmental engineering and researcher perspective. As previously the event will take place at Aalto Media Factory auditorium.

She will begin with a historical development of waste management, as well as giving a picture of the present situation, from the Global and European perspective. She will present the waste hierarchy (in EU legislation) and different aspects of recycling, recyclability, including challenges and opportunities, waste prevention and avoidance. Törn will include results from her research in waste electrocial and electronic equipment, complementing other recent Talking Trash(lab) presentations.

Maria Törn's research area of interest is Waste Management, especially recycling. For the past 5 years she has mostly worked on different research projects within waste management, as well as teaching, focusing on waste electrical and electronic equipment.

After finishing her Master’s degree (Environmental Technology at Helsinki University of Technology) she worked on a project creating environmental and quality management systems for a forest products company. Before “returning” to the university for her current PhD studies at Aalto University, Törn worked also at YTV (waste management company of the Helsinki metropolitan area), as an environmental expert and later as environmental engineer. Formerly at Aalto Lahti Center, she is now based at the Aalto University department of civil and environmental engineering in Otaniemi, Espoo.
